Etisalat Nigeria became 9mobile in 2017.

Every carrier ran a walled portal reachable only from a phone, built of numbered menus you drove with the keypad. It sold ringtones, wallpapers and horoscopes by weekly subscription, and it was almost impossible to leave — every deck ended in another deck. The USSD dialer beside it was the only interface that always worked, on any phone, with no credit.

On the record

  • WAP decks were numbered lists navigated entirely by keypad — no pointer existed.
  • Content was sold as recurring weekly subscriptions confirmed by replying with a digit.
  • USSD codes ran over the signalling channel, so they worked with zero data balance.
  • Etisalat Nigeria rebranded as 9mobile in July 2017 after its parent withdrew.
