Eighty-four pixels across, and you chose them carefully.

The screen was 84 by 48 pixels and every one of them was on or off. Into that budget went hearts, lions, flags, names, and declarations you would not say aloud. Wallpapers passed between phones by infrared and cable, and setting one was a decision you lived with, because changing it meant finding someone with the file.

On the record

  • The 3310-class display was 84x48 pixels, monochrome — no greys, only on and off.
  • Text was entered by multi-tap: press 2 three times for C.
  • Images spread device to device by infrared, not by download.
  • Every wallpaper here is drawn to a canvas at one bit per pixel when you open it.
